Chenab Bridge Inaugurated: World's Tallest Railway Bridge Now Links Kashmir to India

PM Modi Inaugurates World's Highest Railway Bridge, Connecting Kashmir to India's Heart"

On June 6, 2025, a historic milestone was achieved as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab Rail Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This monumental event not only signifies an engineering marvel but also symbolizes the unification of the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through an all-weather railway network.

🏗️ The Chenab Bridge: An Engineering Feat

Standing tall at 359 meters above the Chenab River, the Chenab Bridge has earned the distinction of being the world's highest railway arch bridge, surpassing the height of the Eiffel Tower. Spanning 1,315 meters, this steel arch bridge is designed to withstand seismic activities, extreme temperatures, and wind speeds up to 260 km/h. Its construction posed significant challenges due to the rugged Himalayan terrain and harsh climatic conditions.

🚄 Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL): A Lifeline to Kashmir

The Chenab Bridge is a crucial component of the USBRL project, a 272-kilometer railway line aimed at integrating the Kashmir Valley with India's national railway network. Sanctioned in 1994-95, the USBRL project has been constructed at a cost of around ₹37,012 crore. The route includes 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, traversing some of the most challenging terrains in the region.

🚆 Vande Bharat Express: Enhancing Connectivity

In addition to inaugurating the Chenab Bridge, Prime Minister Modi flagged off the Vande Bharat Express train service between Katra and Srinagar. This high-speed train significantly reduces travel time between the two cities to just three hours, enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism and economic development in the region.

🌉 Anji Khad Bridge: India's First Cable-Stayed Railway Bridge

The Anji Khad Bridge, also inaugurated by PM Modi, is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. Spanning the Anji River, this bridge is another engineering feat that addresses the challenges posed by the region's topography. Its design ensures stability and durability, further strengthening the railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.

🌐 Strategic and Economic Significance

The completion of the USBRL project, including the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges, holds immense strategic and economic importance. It not only facilitates the movement of civilians and goods but also enhances the mobility of security forces in a region that has witnessed ongoing militancy and tension. The improved connectivity is expected to boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir.

🏁 Conclusion

The inauguration of the Chenab Bridge and the completion of the USBRL project mark a new chapter in India's infrastructure development. These projects exemplify the nation's commitment to overcoming geographical and political challenges to foster unity and progress. As trains now traverse the world's highest railway bridge, the dream of connecting Kashmir to the rest of India has become a reality, promising a brighter future for the region.
