Operation Sindoor: India's Precision Strike Against Terrorism Across Borders

On May 6, 2025, India launched a historic and highly coordinated military offensive known as Operation Sindoor. This mission marked a significant step in India’s counter-terrorism efforts, following the brutal April 22 Pahalgam attack, where 26 Indian civilians and one Nepali tourist lost their lives to terrorist violence. This retaliatory operation was focused, swift, and strategically aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.


Background: The Pahalgam Attack

The Pahalgam attack was one of the deadliest assaults in recent times. It was allegedly carried out by The Resistance Front (TRF), a group India identifies as an offshoot of Pakistan-based terrorist organizations. The brutal nature of the attack prompted a nationwide demand for justice and a firm response.

What Was Operation Sindoor?

Operation Sindoor was a 23-minute-long precision strike executed by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in collaboration with other branches of the Indian Armed Forces. The operation targeted nine terrorist hubs located in:

Advanced Rafale fighter jets deployed SCALP missiles and AASM Hammer bombs to neutralize terror camps, communication centers, and weapons storage facilities. Importantly, the Indian government emphasized that no Pakistani military installations were targeted, underlining the operation's objective to dismantle terror infrastructure while avoiding escalation.

Casualties and Damage
According to Indian defense sources, the strikes eliminated over 70 militants and injured more than 60. The targeted camps were allegedly operated by Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. On the other hand, Pakistani authorities claimed 26 civilian deaths, including a child, and over 40 injuries, asserting that places of worship were also damaged. These conflicting reports have led to a heated exchange of accusations and denials.

Pakistan's Retaliation

In response, Pakistan launched artillery shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), which reportedly led to the deaths of three Indian civilians. Additionally, the Pakistani military claimed it had downed five Indian aircraft, including Rafale and MiG-29 jets—a claim not confirmed by the Indian side. One IAF aircraft did crash in Srinagar, but the cause is still under investigation.

Indian Government's Stand

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi both reaffirmed the nation's stance: Operation Sindoor was a justified and targeted response to eliminate threats from across the border. Real-time videos released by the Indian Army showcased the precision and planning of the operation, with officials insisting no civilians were harmed on the Indian side.


Global Reactions

The international community responded with concern. The United Nations called for restraint, while countries like the United States urged both nuclear-armed neighbors to de-escalate and return to diplomatic dialogue. Despite these calls, India maintained that its actions were necessary for national security and regional peace.
